Lorraine Collett Petersen (December 9, 1892March 30, 1983) was an American model hired to promote a corporate trademark as the "Sun-Maid Girl".

Lorraine Collett was born to George Dexter Collett and Martha Elizabeth Falkenstein in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1915, Collett was attending high school and working part-time as a seeder and packer for the Griffin & Skelley Packing Company in Fresno, California for $15 a week.[1] That May she was spotted by Leroy Payne, one of the executives of the raisin cooperative, while drying her curly brown hair and wearing her mother's red bonnet in the backyard of her family's home. She was hired to promote the California Associated Raisin Co. by handing out free samples at the Panama-Pacific Exposition and participating in an unusual promotion that had her dropping raisins from an airplane flying over San Francisco.[2]

After modeling for Sun-Maid, Collett moved to Hollywood, California to try to become an actress. She landed a small part in The Trail of the Lonesome Pine before returning to Fresno. There, she ran a restaurant for two years and later converted a former hospital into a nursing home.[6] Collett died on March 30, 1983.

Sun Tzu

(traditional Chinese: ; simplified Chinese: 孙子; pinyin: Sūn Zi, pronounced [suən˥ tsz̩˨˩˦]. Sun is his family name, and Tzu is an honorific in classic Chinese, roughly equivalent to Sir, or the Learned Gentleman. His given name is Wǔ (武). His style name is Chángqīng (長卿). Sun Tzu is traditionally believed to be the author of The Art of War, sometimes called the Sun Tzu, an influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy considered to be a prime example of Taoist strategy. Sun has had a significant impact on Chinese and Asian history and culture, both as an author of the Art of War and as a legendary figure. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Sun's The Art of War grew in popularity and saw practical use in Western society, and his work has continued to influence both Asian and Western culture and politics.

Historians have questioned whether or not Sun was an authentic historical figure. Traditional accounts place him in the Spring and Autumn Period of China (722–481 BCE) as a heroic general of the King of Wu who lived c. 544—496 BCE. Scholars accepting his historicity place his supposed writing The Art of War in the Warring States Period (476–221 BCE), based on the descriptions of warfare in the text. Traditional accounts state that his descendant, Sun Bin, also wrote a master treatise on military tactics.

Main article: The Art of War

The Art of War is attributed to Sun, and it was originally called the Sun Tzu Bing Fa (Pinyin: Sunzi Bingfa), or simply the Sun Tzu. It presents a philosophy of war for managing conflicts and winning battles. Contrary to popular belief, it contains not only the writings of the original author, but also commentary and clarifications from later military philosophers, such as Li Quan and Du Mu. It is accepted as a masterpiece on strategy and often referenced by generals and theorists throughout history.[3] Of the texts written before the unification of China in the 2nd century BCE, six major works survived, including The Art of War. During the Song Dynasty in the early 1st millenium CE, the six works were combined with a Tang Dynasty text into a collection called the Seven Military Classics. As a central part of that compilation, The Art of War formed the foundations of orthodox military theory in China. Illustrating this point, the book was required reading to pass the tests needed for imperial appointment to military positions.[4]

In the book, Sun uses language that may be unusual in a Western text on warfare and strategy. For example, the 11th chapter states that a leader must be "serene and inscrutable" and capable of comprehending "unfathomable plans". The text contains similar remarks that have confused Western readers. The meaning of such statements are clearer when interpreted in the context of Taoist thought and practice. Sun viewed the ideal general as an enlightened Taoist master,[5] which has led to The Art of War being considered a prime example of Taoist strategy.[6]

This is the name SUN as it is written in Mandarin, the legal language of China, by the Emperor, on the Emperor's Robe.  China was unified by conquest, and a system of government established under which everyone was paid for their work.

Sun is spelled in the reverse way from what we now call the Nazi symbol of fascism. The two forces balance each other, SUN being the "female" force, and liberal, soft and bending, as in traditional Christianity; in China the symbol of the Falun Gong the other side representing, the Nazi Swastika predates the Nazis by several thousand years and represents the "Fatherland", with a strict male  hierarchy (as existed in China at the fall of the Ming Dynasty). Similar régimes led to the creation of the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang the First Emperor of China. The terracotta figures, dating from 210 BCE, existed at the end of the rule of the first Emperor. It also led to the creation of the second buried army.

Falun Gong

Traditional Chinese: 法輪功
Simplified Chinese: 法轮功
Literal meaning: Practice of the Wheel of Law, the symbol has no relation[1] with the Nazi swastika

Sun is a compound word, and a geometric design which is copyright protected, being a circle, 17 lines high, and 17 lines wide.

Sun is wholly owned by Dragon, the five toed Imperial Chinese Dragon, or Emperor of China, also called Dragon Brand.
The Emperor is protected by, and protects the Shaolin Temple, a school of Buddhist Martial Arts students.

Falun Gong (Chinese: 法輪功) is a spiritual practice[2] founded in China by Li Hongzhi (李洪志) in 1992. Falun Gong has five sets of qigong exercises; its teachings are focused on the principles of "truthfulness, compassion and forbearance" as set out in the main books Falun Gong[3] and Zhuan Falun.[4] The books, lectures, and exercise materials have been translated into multiple languages and are freely available on the Internet.[5]

Sun is China's first and oldest international brand or trade mark.  It was registered by the Chinese Emperor and recognized by India, in a deal in which allowed China exclusive use of the name, but allowed India to register its own trade names. Both countries agreed to respect the other's international boundaries. The time when India tried to invade China with many fighting elephants, which were captured with clever engineering, is depicted on the 'Willow pattern' plate design, along with a 'Porcelain Palace', which is still buried.
The Chinese army (or Sun Army corp.) has its own airforce which works with China's Navy Airforce.
Traditionally the government of China was carried out by men who had passed their Mandarin examinations, and who received a monthly salary based on the lunar calendar.

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQJAVA)[3] is a multinational vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information technology services, founded on February 24, 1982.[4] The company is headquartered in Santa Clara, California (part of Silicon Valley), on the former west campus of the Agnews Developmental Center.

Products include computer servers and workstations based on its own SPARC processors as well as AMD's Opteron and Intel's Xeon processors; storage systems; and, a suite of software products including the Solaris Operating System, developer tools, Web infrastructure software, and identity management applications. Other technologies of note include the Java platform, MySQL and NFS.

Sun is a proponent of open systems in general and Unix in particular, and a major contributor to open source software.[5]

On April 20, 2009, Sun and Oracle Corporation announced that they entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun for $7.4 billion.[6][7] The deal is still pending, with no date yet given for its completion.

Sun's manufacturing facilities are located in Hillsboro, Oregon, USA and Linlithgow, Scotland.

In 2004, Sun surprised the industry when, after having cultivated a reputation as one of Microsoft's most vocal antagonists, it entered into a joint relationship with them, resolving various legal entanglements between the two companies and receiving US$1.95 billion in settlement payments from them.[67] Sun now supports Microsoft Windows on its x64 systems, and has announced other collaborative agreements with Microsoft, including plans to support each others' virtualization environments.[68]

Sun vs Microsoft

The Java platform was developed at Sun in the early 1990s with the objective of allowing programs to function regardless of the device they were used on, sparking the slogan "Write once, run anywhere" (WORA). While this objective has not been entirely achieved (prompting the riposte "Write once, debug everywhere"), Java is regarded as being largely hardware- and operating system-independent.

Java was initially promoted as a platform for client-side applets running inside web browsers. Early examples of Java applications were the HotJava web browser and the HotJava Views suite. However, since then Java has been more successful on the server side of the Internet.

The platform consists of three major parts, the Java programming language, the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and several Java Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). The design of the Java platform is controlled by the vendor and user community through the Java Community Process (JCP).

Java is an object-oriented programming language. Since its introduction in late 1995, it has become one of the world's most popular programming languages.[69]

Sun is the owner of Netscape and JavaScript.
What's the difference between Java and JavaScript?
Java is completely different from JavaScript-It's a lot more powerful, more complex, and unfortunately, a lot harder to master. It belongs in the same league as C, C++, and other more complex languages. Also, you need to compile a Java program before you can run it, whereas with JavaScript, no compilation is needed-simply open up a text editor, type it, save it, and your browser is ready to run it!

JavaScript was developed for the cameras of the RAF Harrier which had its first flight in 1973.

It is distributed as shareware under the name Netscape and Mozilla (Firefox).
What is Shareware?
Freeware is software which is free.
Shareware is software you can try for a limited time, and then either pay for or delete if you do not wish to pay for it. If you decide to use it without paying for it, you will be bound to pay under the terms of the license agreement.

"Sun Records" label

Sun Records is a record label founded in Memphis, Tennessee, starting operations on March 27, 1952. Founded by Sam Phillips, Sun Records was known for giving notable musicians such as Elvis Presley (whose recording contract was sold to RCA Victor Records for $35,000 in 1955 to relieve financial difficulties they were going through), Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash their first recording contracts and helping to launch their careers. Before those days Sun Records had mainly been noted for recording African-American artists, as Phillips loved Rhythm and Blues and wanted to get black music recorded for a white audience. It was Sun record producer and engineer, Jack Clement, who discovered and recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, while owner Sam Phillips was away on a trip to Florida. The original Sun Records logo was designed by John Gale Parker, Jr., a resident of Memphis and high school classmate of Phillips.

The music of many Sun Records musicians helped lay part of the foundation of late 20th century popular music and rock and roll, plus it influenced many younger musicians, particularly the Beatles. In 2001, Paul McCartney appeared on a tribute compilation album titled Good Rockin' Tonight: The Legacy Of Sun Records.

In 1969, Mercury Records label producer Shelby Singleton— noted for producing the Ray Stevens' hit "Ahab The Arab" in 1962, and later Jeannie C. Riley's 1968 hit single "Harper Valley PTA" on his Nashville based Plantation Records label — purchased the Sun label from Phillips. Singleton merged his operations into Sun International Corporation, which re-released and re-packaged compilations of Sun's early artists in the early 1970s. It would later introduce rockabilly tribute singer Jimmy Ellis in 1980 as Orion taking on the persona of Elvis Presley. The company remains in business today as Sun Entertainment Corporation, which currently licenses its brand and classic hit recordings (many of which have appeared in CD boxed sets and other compilations) to independent reissue labels. Sun Entertainment also includes SSS International Records, Plantation Records, Amazon Records, Red Bird Records, Blue Cat Records among other labels the company acquired over the years.[1]

Its website sells collectible items as well as compact discs bearing the original 1950s Sun logo.

A legal battle was fought over the name “Sun” between the Memphis Recording Service of Memphis, which was issuing records on the Sun label, and the Sun Recording Company of Albuquerque, New Mexico, also issuing records on the Sun label. Louise Massey, the “Sweetheart of the West” who co-wrote My Adobe Hacienda and whose brother wrote the theme song for television’s Petticoat Junction, among others, was its top artist. The lawsuit was settled in favor of the Memphis-based label, but no one noticed that the name and similar label had been in existence in New York for more than six years. The New York-based Sun Recording Corporation was virtually extinct by then, so even if anyone had noticed, no legal action was taken. The Memphis-based Sun Record Company went on to become the label that brought rock and roll music to the world, enjoying early success with Sun 181, Bear Cat (The Answer to Hound Dog) by Rufus Thomas – which also led to Sam Phillips’ second major lawsuit and the record was re-issued with the phrase (The Answer to Hound Dog) deleted. Sun Records in Memphis was sold in 1969 and still operates as Sun Records under the parent company Sun Entertainment Corporation. But the use of the name Sun Record Company did not end there. One other Sun existed during a slightly later era: the Sun Record Company based in Manila. This company did not attempt to disguise its copying of the Memphis Sun labels and re-issued records released by other American labels, such as Imperial 5528, Poor Little Fool written by Eddie Cochran’s fiancée, Sharon Sheeley, which became a massive hit for Ricky Nelson in 1958.

Even though Sam Phillips has died, the sun has not yet set on Sun Records. Numerous licenses have been issued to Germany’s Bear Family Records, England’s Charly Records, and other companies to issue and re-issue the Memphis Sun Records, some with the familiar brown on yellow label. Other companies are re-issuing Louise Massey’s recordings from the Albuquerque-based Sun Record Company.

The first 'Sun Records' in Europe were single-sided disc records put out by The Crystalate Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company Ltd. of Tonbridge, Kent, England, from about 1905 to 1910. (The same company would later produce records under the name Imperial Records). A nearly contemporaneous label was produced in the United States by The Leeds & Catlin Company, about 1905–1907.

Sun International Records was the record label of Shelby S. Singleton. It re-released the original Sun Records discs.

The Shaolin Monastery or Shaolin Temple (Chinese: 少林寺; pinyin: Shàolínsì), is a Chán Buddhist temple at Song Shan near Zhengzhou City Henan Province in Dengfeng, China. It is led by abbot Venerable abbot Shi Yǒngxìn. Founded in the 5th century, the monastery is long famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu, and it is the Mahayana Buddhist monastery perhaps best known to the Western world.[1]

The first Shaolin Monastery abbot was Batuo, also called Fotuo or Bhadra (the Chinese translation for Buddha), an Indian dhyana master who came to China from India in AD 464 to spread Buddhist teachings.[3]

According to the Continued Biographies of Eminent Monks (AD 645) by Dàoxuān, the Shaolin Monastery was built on the north side of Shaoshi, the western peak of Mount Song, one of the four Sacred Mountains of China, (Zhongshan, from Zhong in Mandarin and Cantonese meaning middle and the name for China, and Shan meaning mountain ), by Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty in AD 477. Yang Xuanzhi, in the Record of the Buddhist Monasteries of Luoyang (AD 547), and Li Xian, in the Ming Yitongzhi (AD 1461), concur with Daoxuan's location and attribution. The Jiaqing Chongxiu Yitongzhi (AD 1843) specifies that this monastery, located in the province of Henan, was built in the 20th year of theTàihé era of the Northern Wei Dynasty, that is, the monastery was built in AD 497.

Kangxi, the second Qing emperor, was a supporter of the Shaolin temple in Henan and he wrote the calligraphic inscriptions that, to this day, hang over the Heavenly King Hall and the Buddha Hall.[4]

According to the scripture [Lotus Sutra], this deity (Narayana) is a manifestation of Avaokitesvara (Guanyin).[14][15]

"If a person who compassionately nourishes all living beings employs this [deity's] charm, it will increase his body's strength (zengzhang shen li). It fulfills all vows, being most efficacious. ... Therefore those who study Narayana's hand-symbolism (mudra), those who seek his spell (mantra), and those who search for his image are numerous. Thus we have erected this stele to spread this transmission."[16]
